How We started Stained Glass

Early in 2000, Tom had been asking my mother who ties fishing flies professionally to teach him how to tie flies.  She told him no about three times before he finially quit asking.  About a week later she came over with three beginning stained glass books, the class schedule for stained glass classes in Colville, Wahington and an offer to pay for the beginning tools needed to get started in exchange for some stained glass later on.  In March of 2000 Tom started taking stained glass classes and each night he came home I would question him about everything he had learned that day.  On one of his first practice pieces, a 4 x 6 inch star design, I kept advising him to add more solder and make the lines bigger and rounder.  He kept telling me he didn't think that was quite right but decided not to argue.  I was a little embarresed to find out that his teacher kept asking him how he had managed to get that much solder on one small piece.
After classes were finished we started making small pieces intended as gifts for our family.  As people saw them and started asking to buy them we decided there was definitely a market for our work.  We started our business doing just small gift items and taking them to craft shows.  It wasn't long before people were asking us to do some larger windows for doors and windows.  We commissioned our first religious window in 2002 for a small parish in Long Creek, Oregon.  Our first international piece went to France in 2004.  Currently we are working on private pieces for our home which we are remodeling.  We hope to make it part of our permenant gallery.

In August 2004, an article appeared about Blue Moon Studios at
